The Role of the Majlis in a UAE Home
The word majlis (مجلس) translates roughly as a place of sitting. Historically it was where a community gathered to discuss matters together and to meet the ruling sheikh, and that public function still exists today. Inside the home, the majlis is the room where a family receives guests, and it carries the weight of a cultural obligation: hospitality is central to Emirati identity, and how a household hosts says a great deal about it.
That is why the room is planned differently from a Western living room. Seating runs along the walls and the centre is left open, so every guest can see and address everyone else, and so gahwa and dates can be carried around the room without anyone standing up. Elders and honoured guests are seated in the prime positions, usually facing the entrance. The arrangement is not decorative; it encodes respect.
Traditional Emirati houses commonly gave the majlis its own external door, so visitors were received without ever entering the private part of the home. Many Dubai villas still follow that pattern today, which is why the entrance approach and the position of the guest cloakroom matter as much as the finishes.

Types of Majlis We Design
Many Emirati and Gulf households host men and women separately, and the villa plan reflects that. Other clients want a single majlis that works for any gathering. Both briefs are common, and the difference shows up in the entrance strategy more than in the finishes.
Men's Majlis
The formal guest majlis, traditionally placed at the front of the villa with its own external entrance and its own guest cloakroom, so visitors are received without passing through the family areas of the home. It is usually the largest and most formally finished room in the house.
Ladies' Majlis
Reached from inside the home rather than from the street, the ladies majlis hosts female guests with the same care and formality. Layout and finish follow the same principles, often with a lighter palette and more daylight where the elevation allows.
Family Majlis
A less formal sitting room used daily by the household. Seating is more relaxed, television and casual furniture are welcome here, and the room is designed for comfort over ceremony.
Apartment Majlis
In apartments and townhouses the majlis is often a defined zone rather than a separate room. We use joinery, ceiling detail, screening and a change of lighting to give it identity without losing the floor area a wall would take.
Majlis Extension or Annexe
Some villa owners add a detached or semi-detached majlis in the plot, with its own entrance, washroom and service pantry. This route requires community approval and a Dubai Municipality permit, which we cover as part of the project.
Outdoor Majlis
A shaded courtyard or terrace majlis for the cooler months, with weather-tolerant frames, UV-stable fabrics, screening for privacy and lighting that works after sunset.

Majlis Sizing and Seating Capacity
The first question in any majlis brief is how many guests you need to seat at peak, not on an average evening. Eid, weddings and condolence gatherings set the number. As a planning rule, allow around 2 sqm of room area per seated guest once the open centre and circulation are accounted for.

Seat height is a real decision, not a detail. Floor-level seating with bolsters is the traditional form and still preferred by many families, while seating held at 42 to 45cm suits older guests and mixed-age gatherings. Traditional, Contemporary and Transitional Majlis Design
A modern majlis is not a majlis with the tradition removed. The spatial logic stays, perimeter seating, an open centre, a clear arrival for guests, and the material language changes. These are the three directions clients in Dubai choose between.
Traditional Majlis Design
Continuous perimeter seating close to the floor, bolsters and cushions rather than deep sofas, carved timber and plaster detail, geometric and arabesque motifs, brass and copper accents, patterned rugs and a rich palette of deep reds, greens and gold. Arched openings and mashrabiya screens carry the architectural language.
Contemporary Majlis Design
The same spatial logic in a modern register: perimeter seating held at sofa height, clean joinery lines, fluted timber and textured plaster in place of carving, a restrained palette of sand, stone, off-white and charcoal, brushed brass or matte black hardware, and linear recessed lighting instead of heavy cornice.
Transitional Majlis Design
The most requested brief we receive. Modern proportions and a calm palette, with two or three genuinely traditional moves: a carved screen, an arched niche, a patterned rug or a hand-worked plaster ceiling. It reads current without losing the cultural anchor.

Majlis Design Elements We Handle
Seating Layout and Upholstery
Custom seating built to the wall runs, whether floor-level majlis seating with bolsters or a raised sofa height for older guests. We size the depth, the back angle and the armrest so a guest can sit comfortably for two hours, and we specify commercial-grade fabric because a majlis takes far heavier use than a living room.
Decorative Woodwork and Screens
Carved and panelled timber, mashrabiya-style screens, door surrounds, ceiling coffering and wall panelling. Screens are useful as well as decorative, softening sightlines from the entrance into the seating without closing the room.
Ceiling and Lighting Design
A central chandelier as the anchor, a recessed perimeter layer for even light across the seating, and a warm accent layer for evening gatherings. Tunable fittings from around 2700K to 4000K let the same room read bright for a daytime reception and low for late evening.
Flooring and Rugs
Marble, large-format porcelain or engineered timber with a substantial traditional or contemporary rug in the open centre. The rug sets the room dimension, so it is specified with the seating rather than bought afterwards.
Service Provision
Gahwa and dates are served throughout the visit, so we plan a serving console, a discreet pantry or a service route from the kitchen that does not cross the guest seating. In larger majlis rooms a small preparation area next to the entrance saves the household constant walking.

Majlis budgets divide cleanly by how much of the room you are changing. If the shell stays and only the furniture, curtains and lighting change, the number is modest. Materials Specified for Heavy Hosting and UAE Conditions
A majlis is used harder than any other room in a UAE villa. Twenty-five people at a time, hot drinks carried across it, and a climate that swings between 45C outdoors and air-conditioned interiors held at 30 to 40 percent relative humidity. Specification has to answer both.
Upholstery built for heavy hosting
Fabrics rated at 50,000 Martindale rubs or higher with stain-repellent treatment. A majlis seats far more people per year than any other room in the villa, and residential-grade fabric shows it within a season.
Removable and replaceable covers
We build seating with removable seat and back covers so cushions can be cleaned or recovered without dismantling the joinery. Over a ten-year life this is the single most useful decision in the room.
Timber and board for UAE humidity
Moisture-resistant board for panelling carcasses and solid timber used for frames, edges and carved detail rather than wide panels, because solid wood moves between 45C outdoor humidity and air-conditioned interior air.
Stone and porcelain flooring
Marble and large-format porcelain hold up to constant foot traffic and to strong daylight through majlis glazing better than timber flooring, and they suit the formality of the room.
Metals and hardware
Brushed brass, antique bronze and matte black are the current majlis palette. In coastal villas we specify coated or stainless fixings, because salt air finds untreated steel quickly.
Cooling and comfort
A majlis holding 25 guests generates significant heat and moisture load. We check the AC provision against occupancy at design stage rather than discovering it at the first large gathering.
