Types of Marble: Complete Guide for Dubai Interiors

By Roosa Kaskinen, Interior Designer

From Calacatta and Carrara to Armani Grey, black Marquina, onyx, and locally-quarried Omani beige: a practical guide to the marble types most commonly used in Dubai and UAE interior projects.

Marble is a broad term that covers a wide family of natural stones, technically referring to metamorphic limestone, but in common interior design usage it includes travertine, onyx, and several other natural stones used in similar applications. The differences between marble types go well beyond appearance: hardness, porosity, vein intensity, and suitability for different applications vary significantly between types.

Below is a practical reference guide to the marble types most commonly specified in Dubai residential and commercial projects, organised by colour family.

White & Cream Marble

Grades, 2026 prices per sqm and room-by-room picks for Carrara, Statuario, Thassos and Volakas are in the white marble guide.

Calacatta

Italy

Colour: Bright white, gold/grey veining

Best for: Kitchen islands, dining tables, bathroom feature walls, flooring

The most prestigious marble type. Bold veining and bright white background. Rarer and more expensive than Carrara.

Carrara

Italy

Colour: White-grey, fine grey veining

Best for: Flooring, bathroom walls, countertops, coffee tables

The most widely used Italian marble. Cooler white tone and subtle veining. More accessible than Calacatta.

Statuario

Italy

Colour: White with bold grey veins

Best for: Feature walls, dining tables, statement countertops

Similar to Calacatta but with stronger, more dramatic grey veining on a bright white ground. Very premium.

Volakas White

Greece

Colour: White with fine grey-purple veining

Best for: Flooring, bathroom walls, countertops

Greek white marble with a clean, luminous appearance. Less veining movement than Calacatta, good for large floor installations.

Arabescato

Italy

Colour: White with fine, arabesque grey veining

Best for: Bathroom walls, feature countertops

Fine, detailed veining that creates an intricate, almost hand-drawn pattern. More delicate in appearance than Calacatta.

Grey Marble

Why "Armani Grey" can mean two different stones, which finishes are safe on wet floors, and what each grey costs: see the grey marble guide.

Armani Grey (Grigio Armani)

Iran or Turkey

Colour: Silver to charcoal grey with fine white veins

Best for: Flooring, TV units, bathroom floors, feature surfaces

A trade name that UAE yards use for both the dark Iranian stone (Pietra Grey) and lighter Turkish greys, so check the country and selection on the quote. Pairs well with brass and walnut.

Tundra Grey

Turkey

Colour: Grey with beige-brown undertones

Best for: Flooring, countertops, bathroom walls

Quarried in Isparta, south-west Turkey. A light to medium grey with a warm cast and a fossil-like texture that hides tracked-in sand.

Beige & Cream Marble

Crema Marfil grades, Omani Beige tile prices and how Crema Uno differs from Botticino are covered in the beige marble guide.

Crema Marfil

Spain

Colour: Warm cream-beige, subtle veining

Best for: Flooring, bathroom walls, staircases

One of the most popular flooring marbles in the UAE. Warm and neutral. Works with almost any interior colour palette.

Travertine

Italy/Turkey

Colour: Warm beige-cream-gold, natural pitting

Best for: Pool decks, flooring, feature walls, coffee tables

A limestone rather than marble, but widely grouped with marble materials. Warm and organic, popular for Mediterranean-style villas.

Omani Beige (Omani Marble)

Oman

Colour: Warm beige, earthy tones

Best for: Flooring, exterior paving, large-area surfaces

Quarried in the Sultanate of Oman and stocked in the UAE as ready-to-use tiles, which keeps lead times short. Good value for large villa and hotel floors.

Botticino

Italy

Colour: Warm beige-cream with fossil inclusions

Best for: Flooring, staircases, bathroom walls

A classic Italian beige marble with warm tones and subtle veining. Long-popular in Gulf residential architecture.

Black Marble

Black Marquina (Nero Marquina)

Spain

Colour: Deep black, white veining

Best for: Coffee tables, dining tables, bathroom floors, feature walls

High contrast and dramatic. The black marble standard. Pairs well with brass, white marble, and contemporary interiors.

Portoro

Italy

Colour: Deep black with gold veining

Best for: Feature surfaces, coffee tables, bathroom accents

Quarried in small volumes on the Ligurian coast, which keeps it at the top of the price range. Black with dramatic gold veins.

Green, Red & Special Marble

Green Marble

Various

Colour: Rich green with white/gold veins

Best for: Coffee tables, side tables, feature surfaces, bathroom walls

Increasingly popular for statement furniture in Dubai interiors. Verde Alpi and Forest Green are the most common varieties.

Onyx

Various

Colour: Translucent: green, honey, white varieties

Best for: Backlit feature walls, bar tops, statement furniture

Onyx is translucent: when backlit it creates a glowing effect. One of the most dramatic materials available. Very premium.

Rosso Levanto

Italy/Turkey

Colour: Deep burgundy-red with white veining

Best for: Feature walls, accent furniture, luxury bathrooms

A striking red marble, one of the most dramatic options for a feature wall or statement furniture piece.
